For the past three decades, Aruban legend Claudius Philips has cemented his place among the elite of Dutch Caribbean music with a string of hits and other musical milestones. Coming from a musical family in San Nicolas, his career started in 1981 when at the age of 16 he participated in the “Mr Valentine Song Festival” in St. Maarten. He won the festival and received the title ‘Mr. Valentine’. In that same year he participated in another festival in Aruba, namely ‘Talented Teens’, which he also won and after which he started using the stage name ‘Mighty Talent’. In the ensuing two years he had many more successes and won many other prizes in recognition of his talent but the event that he credits with really changing his life in the blink of an eye was his participation in the ‘Organización de la Televisión Ibero-Americano’ festival in 1983. The Netherlands Antilles as a country at the time belonged to this organization that organized this festival for singers from across Latin America who had won song festivals in their respective countries and so Philips was eligible to compete. Representing the islands, he, at the age of 18, competed against 20 other world renowned singers and impressively came in third. This and the fact that he won the ‘Calypso and Roadmarch contest’ that year, earning him the title ‘Calypso King’, garnered him massive exposure. From then on he was frequently booked for shows and was the member of many bands up until the year 1990, when he departed to Boston after he received a scholarship from the Aruban government to follow a one year module at the ‘Berkley College of Music’. There he reassessed his genuine passion for music and upon his return to Aruba he formed his own band named ‘O.R.E.O.’ which stands for ‘One Real Electronic Organization’, officially ‘Claudius i su grupo OREO’. With them he went on to launch himself to unprecedented heights in the music scene of the ABC islands in the 1990s and 2000s with their album sales setting records that still stand to this day. Their album ‘Saka E Boem’ in particular was their crown jewel, garnering Philips a ‘Golden Award’ and a ‘Platinum Award’ from the ‘Disc Maker’ organization in Philadelphia, USA. He is the only artist of Dutch Caribbean descent to have achieved this feat. He has also captured the ‘Calypso King’ and ‘Roachmarch King’ crown on thirteen occasions, another impressive feat. He and his band continue to be successful on the ABC islands, delighting locals and tourists alike with spectacular shows. They have played in venues on all the islands of the Dutch Antilles, along with venues in Suriname, Holland and New York. Many couples in Aruba say they met at the parties where they have played. Philips hopes to one day open up a night club where he can continue to delight crowds with his musical stylings.
