Is it normal that after rescuing the villagers, the screen goes black and doesn't go from there?

So I've noticed this game has a pretty significant issue and I didn't see anyone else even mention it. Although a few have most definitely experienced it without realizing the cause.
Holding 'Shift' is how you switch between running and walking. It is also the key you press to toggle the display of text windows. All text windows. Cutscenes, H scenes, idle villager chat, battle menus... All Text Windows! The issues arise because absolutely nothing is stopping you from disabling text windows even when there is no text on screen!
What this means is, if you hold shift to position yourself for any reason and then get into a battle or simply talk to someone, the game will completely lock up until you press shift again and at no point is any of this ever explained!

I actually asked about this above. I guess the translation isn't very big so it doesn't matter, but it would still be nice to know just from reading the OP

Is the open world combat completely bugged? I can't seem to defeat anything! Plus they removed the virgin route, sad.
